What Is Alimony?

Alimony is a financial support payment from one spouse to the other. In Tennessee, there are four specific types of alimony that may be awarded based on your particular circumstances.

Alimony in futuro: Alimony in futuro, also known as periodic alimony, may be awarded by the court in long-term marriage situations. The purpose of alimony in futuro is to provide the receiving spouse with the financial means to continue to live a lifestyle close to what he or she enjoyed during the marriage.

Rehabilitative alimony: Rehabilitative alimony may be put in place to help a spouse further his or her education in an effort to increase earning capacity.

Transitional alimony: Transitional alimony may be applicable if the court determines rehabilitation is not necessary, but the economically disadvantaged spouse needs assistance while adjusting to the financial consequences of divorce.

Alimony in solido: Alimony is solido is also known as lump sum alimony. When alimony in solido is awarded, the court allows one spouse to pay a specific amount of money to make up for an imbalance in martial property division.
