Think about what your child needs as you deal with child custody

In our previous blog post, we discussed a new development in Tennessee that will allow people who have children to file for an uncontested divorce. If you recall, you can’t have real property and you must work through the custody-related issues together. Even when you think about having to work with your ex, you might realize that this option is one that will work for you.

If you are thinking about ending your marriage and you have children together, you are going to have to push your own feeling to the side and think about your children. The child custody aspect of the divorce is one that can be contentious if you and your ex don’t focus on the child. We know that it is easy to try to make life difficult for your ex, but this usually isn’t in the best interests of the children.

When you think about what is best for your children, you probably realize that what is best for them is to have a relationship with both parents. Having to continue to deal with your ex might not be on the top of your fun list, but you might as well make the most of it since you have children together.

As you work on the child custody agreement, you should decide who is going to make decisions for your child. You and your ex might opt to do this together or one parent might take the lead on decisions. Either way, be sure that you can live with the choices you make in the child custody agreement.

It is sometimes possible to modify a custody agreement that isn’t working any longer. This would mean that you need to head back to court, but it is possible if you just can’t make the other agreement work. Before you choose to exercise this option, be sure to think about how the upheaval might impact your child.
